Many women often wonder when the right time is to see a gynaecologist for the first time. Some wait until they experience discomfort, irregular periods or other noticeable symptoms, while others may delay appointments, thinking routine checkups are only necessary if something feels wrong. However, gynaecological care is not just about addressing problems—it's an important part of understanding your body, maintaining long-term reproductive health and building a trusted relationship with a healthcare professional who can guide you through different life stages.

Whether you are experiencing menstrual concerns, planning for fertility or simply want to stay informed about your health, knowing when to start can make a meaningful difference.

When Your Periods Feel Different

Your menstrual cycle can offer important insights into your overall health. If you notice that your periods are unusually heavy, irregular or particularly painful, it may be time to seek medical advice.

Rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen, early evaluation can help identify underlying conditions such as hormonal imbalances or gynaecological issues. Addressing these concerns early may prevent them from affecting your daily life over time.

If You Are Sexually Active

Becoming sexually active is another important point at which to consider seeing a gynaecologist. This is not only about screening for infections, but also about understanding how to protect your reproductive health.

A consultation can help you explore contraception options that suit your lifestyle and preferences. It also provides a safe space to discuss topics that may feel sensitive, with guidance that is tailored to your needs.

When You Are Planning for the Future

You may also benefit from seeing a gynaecologist even if you are not experiencing any symptoms. If you are thinking about starting a family in the future, or simply want to understand your fertility health, an early consultation can be helpful. This allows you to discuss factors that may affect fertility and gain clarity on what to expect when you are ready. Having this information early can help you make more informed decisions later on.

During Different Life Stages

Your healthcare needs will naturally change over time, and a gynaecologist can support you through each stage. From managing menstrual health in your younger years to navigating pregnancy or menopause later on, regular check-ins can help you stay on track.

Even if everything feels normal, routine visits provide an opportunity to monitor your health and address any subtle changes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

When Something Does Not Feel Right

Sometimes, the clearest sign that you should see a gynaecologist is simply a feeling that something is not quite right. This could include pelvic pain, unusual discharge, changes in your cycle or discomfort during daily activities.

It can be tempting to ignore these signs or hope they resolve on their own. However, seeking advice early can provide reassurance or help identify issues before they become more complex.

Take Charge of Your Gynaecological Health

Seeing a gynaecologist is not only about addressing problems. It is also about giving yourself the confidence that comes with understanding your body and knowing where to turn when you need support.

At the Women's Clinic of Singapore led by Dr Jen Shek Wei, care is focused on helping you feel informed, comfortable and supported at every stage of your journey. Take the next step for your well-being and book an appointment to begin your journey to confident gynaecological care.
